but my understanding is you want it soft on compression to soak up the bump, and firm on rebound so that the energy absorbed by the spring isn't released too quickly to avoid undesired chassis movement. I think typical "street" coilovers avoid separate adjustments to keep costs down more than anything. FWIW, Sean Farrah's Z32 has 3-way adjustable Penske coilovers with very high spring rates (don't recall the exact #'s), and because of the superior valving and adjustments, rides much better than another Z equipped with a softer spring rate 1 way adjustable Zeal setup.
